Common questions

How do I play?

Each puzzle is a real quotation with its letters replaced by numbers, and the same number always means the same letter throughout. Tap a tile, then tap a letter on the keyboard. Spaces and punctuation are never encrypted, so word shapes are your way in — short words first, then the letters they give you.

A letter I have used is greyed out. Why?

Because each letter can sit on only one number. A greyed key shows the number it is currently on — tap it to jump straight back to that tile and change your mind.

I bought Pro and it is not showing on my other device

Open Settings → Cryptica Pro → Restore purchases, signed in to the same account that made the purchase: your Apple Account on iPhone and iPad, your Google account on Android. Restore is always reachable, even when the store cannot be contacted. A purchase belongs to one store, so Pro bought on iPhone does not carry over to Android, or the other way round.

What does Cryptica Pro include?

One purchase, no subscription: all advertising removed, unlimited new levels every day, unlimited hints and revives, and chapters that open sooner — a new chapter needs 40% of the one before it instead of 60%. Chapters are still earned by playing; Pro does not unlock them all at once.

Why can I start only five new levels a day?

Without Pro, you can start five new chapter levels each day, and the count starts again at midnight. The day you first start a level and the day after have no limit. Going back to a level you left part-way never counts, and the Daily Cipher and Challenge mode are never limited. A short video adds one more level, up to three a day, and Cryptica Pro removes the limit.

Where did my progress go?

Progress is stored on the device and is not synced between devices, so deleting the app deletes it, unless restoring a backup of the device brings it back. Progress is also tracked separately for each puzzle language — switching language in Settings does not lose your other campaign, it just shows a different one.

Why are there no interstitial ads?

Because being interrupted mid-thought ruins this particular game. Banners and rewarded videos you choose to watch are the whole of it, and Pro removes even those. This is deliberate and is not going to change.

Where do the quotations come from?

All of them are in the public domain or are traditional proverbs — Eminescu, Shakespeare, Pushkin, Austen, Chekhov, Creangă, Caragiale, Dickens and others. Every level records its source and rights holder, and anything still inside its copyright term is rejected before it reaches the game.

I think an attribution is wrong

Please tell me — quote the level and what it should say. Misattribution is a bug worth fixing quickly, and corrections ship in content updates.

Romanian diacritics and Russian Ё

They are full letters here, not decorations. Ă, Â, Î, Ș and Ț each have their own number, as does Ё. A puzzle is not solvable without them, which is why the Romanian keyboard carries them.
